Scooch faced a challenging task of escaping his dim confinement and reaching the open space without the help of his back legs.
Animal rescuers found Scootch hiding under his abandoned home, which was located at the end of a gravel road surrounded by other uninhabited residences. Despite the darkness, the team was able to spot the brown Pitbull using their spotlights. However, when Donna approached him, he retreated to a corner and growled softly. It wasn’t until she threw him a wiener that he ceased his snarling and began to crawl forward on his front legs to retrieve the food.
Donna observed that Scooch was unable to use his back legs, indicating that he was paralyzed. She noted that the dog was so famished that he eagerly devoured every morsel of food she offered him. Donna then reached out to Stray Rescue of St. Louis through their website, expressing concern about how long Scooch had been stranded and scared. Following a discussion, they concluded that enticing him with food would be the most comfortable and secure strategy to lure him out.
Scooch struggled to move forward, his frail frame unable to fight the urge to eat. Upon reaching the entrance of the doghouse, Donna hesitated, unsure of what to expect. However, Scooch seemed to take a liking to them at first sight and welcomed their presence. Upon closer inspection, Donna realized the dismal state that Scooch was in. The poor dog was severely emaciated, with visible wounds on his hind legs from dragging himself on the ground.
With gentle care, they carefully moved him onto the car seat while covering him with a warm blanket. The dog’s grateful gaze was fixed on them as they provided aid and comfort inside the cool confines of the car. Donna shared that his appreciative look was proof that he understood their intentions were pure.
