There are people who love and treat their dogs like family, but unfortunately, there are others who subject them to cruel treatment. This was the case with Cala, a guard dog in San Jose, Costa Rica. Her owner kept her chained up on a short leash that made it impossible for her to rest or even breathe properly. When she was sick, Cala’s owner refused to take her to the vet and rarely fed her. Fortunately, Cala’s ordeal came to an end thanks to the intervention of concerned neighbors who reported her situation to the police and the animal shelter, Territorio de Zaguates.
After her rescue, Cala had to receive treatment for emaciation, wounds, and malnutrition. Lya Battle, the founder of Territorio de Zaguates, described Cala as a broken creature robbed of her dignity and waiting for the end to come. The healing process was slow and painful, and Cala had to endure further abuse when someone tried to poison some of the dogs at the sanctuary. Despite this, Cala survived and is now living with a foster family. She has learned to get along with humans and dogs and is happy, strong, and spoiled by her new family. Territorio de Zaguates is a sanctuary that rescues and shelters hundreds of homeless dogs in Costa Rica, giving them love, care, and affection.

Back in June, a few sneaky individuals attempted to harm the lovely dogs at Territorio de Zaguates by feeding them sausages that were contaminated with poison. How cruel!

Cala is currently enjoying her best life in a fresh abode, as reported by Battle. The pup seems to be content, robust, determined, and somewhat stubborn, and she’s receiving plenty of pampering from her foster mother and family.
The story of this furry friend has a joyful conclusion, but it was disheartening for many to learn of the mistreatment she endured in the past.
